Managing the Critical Path
A fundamental element of gaining control during times of chaos is to establish the “critical path of necessary events”. The goal is to systematically address the proper sequence of tasks required to accomplish the goal of cost effective recovery.
Message from the Managing Principal
At OSVPM, we believe in seeking the simplest and most cost-effective solutions to mitigating damages and controlling time and cost exposures that result from commercial catastrophic loss, be it from fire, flood or regional disasters. Having spent my entire career dedicated to providing solutions to complex, loss related problems, to insurers, Fortune 500 Companies and their placing brokers, I have learned that nothing replaces vision and flexibility when seeking the most cost effective and timely alternatives, given the various relationships and need sets of the interested parties.
What you will find on this site, hopefully, is a simple description of the value added services provided by OSVPM in its’ effort to respond to the urgent needs of our clients when faced with a crippling exposure to loss. No fancy graphics…no hype. Our firm belief and fundamental business philosophy considers that there are finite parameters to any loss exposure and we stay true to the concept of supplying solutions that focus on the nature of the loss and what it actually takes to overcome the damages. No more, no less…
When your business is on the line, when your claim dollars are being spent, and when your ability to provide your clients value added service in extreme times of need are the measures of your success, then OSVPM is a resource you can rely on to pull out the stops to restore functionality to business, minimize cost and time exposures, and work hard every day to facilitate and manage solutions that meet and exceed the needs and goals of all of the interested parties…
Very Truly Yours,

Understanding Relationships
“Relationships Within the Framework of the Claims Process”
Large deductibles, aggregates, SIR programs and captives have significantly changed the landscape of the commercial insurance claims markets. There is a synergistic relationship between all parties in the ‘relationship triangle’ that have shared needs along each axis.
- As a corporate claim or risk manager, are you making decisions that you feel comfortable will prove to be acceptable at the time “self-insured” claim levels and deductibles are breached?
- As an insurer or adjuster, can we qualify and quantify what has been expended at the deductible, SIR, aggregate or captive level?
- As a broker or underwriter have you offered the best support and advice possible to assist YOUR client in the decision process as it pertains to policy considerations concerning mitigation of damages both below and above “claim line”?
OSVPM understands the needs and goals of each of the interested parties and endeavors to balance those needs against the complexities of any complex commercial claim.
Managing the Critical Path
Controlling the ‘Uncontrollable’
A fundamental element of gaining control during times of chaos is to establish the “critical path of necessary events”. The goal is to systematically address the proper sequence of tasks required to accomplish the goal of cost effective recovery. What needs to be done, who needs to do it and what sequence should the tasks be performed in are functions that require the expertise of experienced mitigation and recovery specialists. At OSVPM, our experts are capable of recognizing the magnitude of the damages, the damage ‘toll’ on the critical functions of the business and are capable of establishing priorities and the proper sequence of events to be performed by qualified contractors and specialists in a manner in which satisfies the overall goal and requirement of the fastest and most cost effective recovery possible given the circumstances of the loss… Task assignment, scheduling, assigning responsibility and accountability are the four critical elements necessary to manage the proper critical path so you can ‘control the uncontrollable’…
Critical Decisions
Affecting the Overall Financial Outcomes
For over forty years, the principals at OSVPM have been advocating a guiding overall “thought process” that affects the overall financial outcomes all of the interested parties are concerned with. Each and every exposure to Loss…should consider what would happen if no insurance coverage is available for a particular loss exposure. What sound business decisions would be made if you found yourself in that situation? What are the time, value and cost impacts faced by an entity faced with the prospects of financially un-aided assistance in the recovery operation?
The Importance of Implementing
Timely Mitigation Procedures
The focus of the initial response is critical to cost effectively managing the overall outcomes. EMS (Emergency Mitigation Services) as an industry term, has expanded in meaning from defining the true services needed to mitigate or control the damage to a generic term that covers ‘all phases’ of the work. True EMS focuses solely on only those services that are effective in ‘suspending the effects of the damage’ rather than the full suite of services required to restore pre-loss conditions. The timely application of true EMS (closing the building envelope, gross debris removal, restoration of building services [i.e. power and water]) are the focused emergency service segments that ‘buys’ the decision makers time in order to define the full scope of work, schedule the timing of events and extending proper costs, all of which, should result in a commitment from the contractor(s) to the interested parties.
Cost and Value Considerations
Cost impact of Labor and Productivity
Understanding cost and value of the restoration phase of the work is critical to making proper decisions on how to proceed with the necessary work. In order to achieve a level of confidence in the cost related decisions you make in this phase of the recovery, it is essential to understand the cost impact of labor and productivity in order to achieve a successful outcome in terms of timeliness (productivity!) and cost effectiveness (value!) What is the overall impact of expending overtime costs in relation to minimizing business interruption and extra expense? Is business interruption even a covered “loss” in relation to the policy considerations? Covered or not…is there a “value” to be garnered by expeditiously pursuing the work required to mitigate damages ensuring that the function of the business is quickly restored in order to retain customers? The news spreading within your client community that your ability to supply goods and services as expected has been negatively impacted means one thing…advantage to your competition!
